Blow off the cobwebs – our favourite country walks!

Christmas is over, the New Year is here and what is better than a good country stroll to blow off those cobwebs, cure your January blues and walk off those mince pies. Here at Chimney Gill Cottage, we’re lucky enough to be on the door step of some of the UK’s best country walks – we’ve shared a couple of our favourite with you below, so when you come and stay with us, you know where to start!

  • A Caldbeck Experience – 6 miles

OS Map: O/S 1.25,000. OL5. The English Lakes North East

This walk has great views over the Skiddaw, Blencathra and the Solway Firth with a good mix of riverside, forestry and open farmland, followed by a great opportunity to explore the village of Caldbeck.

Its start point is at grid reference NY323399,  here there is a free car park by the river. Once parked, if you cross the road and join the Cumbrian Way heading east.

The Cumbrian Way passes through the village of Caldbeck and makes its way past two fells –  Faulds Brow and Warnell Fell – these mark the end of the Northern Fells and the beginning of Scottish landscape.

When exploring Caldbeck, be sure to check out the Old Smith tea room and the Oddfellows Arms pub!

  • Carrock Fell – 4.5 miles

If you’re looking for a little bit of a challenge – this walk is for you! Surprisingly steep and tricky in the lower stages of Carrock Fell, but worth it once the main ridge is reached.  Great views in all directions, interesting volcanic rocks contrasting with its slate neighbours and an ancient hill fort at the summit! If you’re lucky, you might even catch some colourful hang gliders making the most of the steep sides and extensive views!

If you start at grid reference NY356322, finding parking in the village of Moresdale, or just on the road coming in from the South, then head up the road to Swinside  to pick your ascent!

After a tricky, but fun fell walk, reward yourself at The Mill Inn in Mungrisedale!
