When you come to stay at Chimney Gill Cottage, you can relax knowing you will have a wonderfully comfortable base in stunning scenery from which you can explore the Cumbrian landscapes and all that it offers.
Let us help with an array of suggestions to keep you busy whilst you’re here, whether that be for a long weekend, a leisurely week or more.
When visiting Chimney Gill, be sure to head south west towards Cockermouth to discover William Wordsworth’s Home, now cared for by the National Trust. This property will take visitors back to the 1770s and has been beautifully maintained to present the house as it would have been occupied. Play a tune on the replica harpsichord, dress up in the children’s room, as they would have done and enjoy a cuppa in the upstairs discovery room whilst learning more about the house today. Step into the magnificently kept garden, with an array of flowers, fruits and vegetables and even meet the resident chickens.
Penrith Castle is an English Heritage site and the ruins now stand within the park on Castle Terrace with views for miles. Whilst you’re in Penrith, explore the town on foot and visit the host of independent shops. The Narrowbar Café on Devonshire Street will take care of any hunger or thirst during your day.
Towards the outskirts of Penrith lies Brougham Castle, another English Heritage site, which pre-dates Penrith Castle. In the picturesque riverside setting, this is a great spot to enjoy a picnic, which will be much deserved by those who have ascended the spiral staircase of the castle to experience the views across the Eden valley.
Should the weather forecast be a little wet, head for the Puzzling Place in Keswick, which offers fun for all ages including brainteasers and illusions –and it’s all indoors! The shop and ‘Puzzling Place’ are free to visit and enjoy. There is a nominal charge for the ‘World of Illusion’ but the optical illusions encountered will enthral all ages.
For another fantastic trip for the family, head to The Lakes Distillery, a mere 26 miles away from our cottage. There are hour-long tours behind the scenes of the distillery, taking place all day, every day. Whilst at the distillery, you can meet the ‘Alpacaly Ever After’ alpacas, as their herd grazes on the distillery’s land so feed them, stroke them and ask questions to find out amazing alpaca facts.
Whatever the duration of your stay with us, there is a wide variety of places to see and things to do amidst this glorious Lake District countryside. If you don’t get to see everything you’ll just have to come again. We’d love to welcome you back. Click here to check our availability.
