There is certainly no denying that Cumbria is one of the most scenic parts of the UK and as we are enjoying the summer heatwave that has hit, it is all the more beautiful. We know that our Chimney Gill guests like to get out and about as much as possible during their stay and explore everything that Cumbria has to offer so we have put together a list of some of our favourite places to visit in Cumbria during the summer
1. Take a cruise on one of the Lake District’s lakes
You can catch a lake cruise in Windermere, Coniston, Ullswater or Derwentwater and it is the perfect way to break up a lakeside walk or hike. Some of the boats have a lot of history and the ‘MV Tern’ in particular is over 125 years old! They’ve got crafty over the years and now offer fish and chip cruises, or even gin if you fancy, which makes for a good night out with a twist.
2. Visit the Beatrix Potter’s House
When Beatrix Potter died in 1943, she left her home to the National Trust under the proviso that everything was left intact. The National Trust has respected her wishes and her home stands in the same way as she left it. A popular tourist attraction (understandably so when you are in the land of Beatrix Potter), visit her home and you’ll not only see some familiar furnishings and items, but you’ll understand the inspiration behind some of her most famous characters.
3. Treetop Trek Windermere
The perfect attraction for a family of adrenaline seekers! The Treetop Trek let s you experience life above the clouds as you climb 40ft high as you navigate your way through the tree tops before coming back down to earth via zipwire!
4. Live for Today Adventures
This outdoor activity centre situated in Kendal is the perfect retreat from modern technology. Live for Today encourages children to play outdoors and have fun; just like the good old days before technology took over. This is the ideal place to spend time as a family or to let the kids run wild and blow off some steam.
5. SUP
Ever heard of SUP? Stand Up Paddle Boarding is the latest water activity to hit Lake Windermere and it is proving to be hugely popular. Helped by the great weather, SUP is the perfect way to try something new. Believe us when we say it isn’t as easy as it looks but well worth giving it ago …. Just be prepared to get wet!
6. Walking
As we’ve mentioned before, the Lake District has some of the most beautiful scenery across the whole of the UK and has an abundance of walking routes for all ages and abilities. With so many to choose from, it’s hard to pick but you’ll never be disappointed! So grab your walking boots, pack a picnic and head out into the fresh air.
7. Lakes Aquarium
While we might be enjoying a great start to summer, the inevitable rainy day is bound to creep in. Rain or not, the Lakes Aquarium is well worth a visit and is full of activities and talks planned throughout the day. Discover the Lakes inhabitants as well as creatures from around the world, which makes this experience both educational and interesting.
8. Lakeland Miniature Village
This little village has been created by one man and hand crafted (no tools!) using Coniston slate. With over 100 buildings on display, the Lakeland Miniature Village preserves historic buildings of the Lake District. If you are well versed in Lake District hotspots and points of interest, it is likely that you will recognise such places in miniature format!
9. Muncaster Castle
Muncaster Castle is an ideal day out and has a jam packed itinerary over the summer months that are sure you to keep everyone entertained. From Shakespeare on the Lawn to a Picnic Cinema, there is always an activity you won’t want to miss.
10. Eat, Drink & Be Merry
There is a fabulous assortment of cafes, pubs and restaurants across the Lake District who cater to our local cuisines and family favourites. The perfect way to round off a day spent outdoors is to relax in one of our quaint pubs with some good food. We couldn’t possibly pick one but if you need recommendations for a particular area, we would be happy to help – just ask!
Of course, this list isn’t exhaustive and with plenty to see and do, you’ll never be stuck for choice! We hope the good weather continues so our holidaymakers can make the most of the most beautiful great outdoors we have here in Cumbria.
