Surviving Your Road Trip To Chimney Gill

Our guests at Chimney Gill Cottage come from far and wide, from all over the UK and sometimes even abroad!  As we are situated on a farm in the Cumbrian countryside, it is inevitable that a car journey of some description is needed to reach us at your final destination.

For some, the journey to get to us can take some time, and particularly with small children this can be more stressful than relaxing!  Your stay at Chimney Gill Cottage is meant to be a break from reality and a way to unwind from daily life so we have put together some tips and tricks that will help you reach us after your car journey.

1. Snacks

Depending on the length of your car journey, packing car snacks can keep the little ones (and the older ones!) occupied for a while.  Be sure to pack food that won’t cause too much of a mess – especially if you are planning on using your car during your time at Chimney Gill Cottage.

2.Games

The old games are the best games!  A game of i-Spy is fun for all the family and can last for hours (if you let it!).  With moving scenery as you head towards us, you are will never be short of inspiration!  Other games include: I’m going on a picnic, car bingo and spot the car make and hangman.

3. Books

This suggestion really depends if you or your children can read in a moving car – some people find it no trouble at all while others feel motion sickness.  If you are one of the lucky ones who don’t struggle reading in the car, packing books and magazines is a good way to keep children occupied and to pass the time.  Encourage your children to read their books out loud and help them with their reading whilst on holiday – they won’t even realise!

4. DVD player/tablet

If you are able to, setting up a DVD player or tablet can keep the kids occupied with games or their favourite TV show.  Another idea is to set up the GPS map on your tablet so that the children can track their journey.  It’s a great way to limit the number of ‘are we there yet’ questions that are inevitable!

 5. Surprises!

Depending on the length of your journey, why not add some little surprise for the kids!  Something new is always ideal to keep them occupied for longer than their usual toys and games.  These can be inexpensive – colouring books & pencils, a magazine or maybe even their favourite snack.
