Festive Traditions – Home or Away

Every family has a host of wonderful traditions in the run up to and throughout Christmas, for young and old, to celebrate this festive season. Whether you are at home, with relations or having a Christmas break away, keep up your traditions, start new ones and have fun with family and friends.

It’s always great fun, if a real tree is your preference, to visit a Christmas tree farm or garden centre and pick the perfect tree for your house. Don’t feel sad for the spindly one – the baubles won’t look good. Be sure you know the height of your living room, so your tree doesn’t have to bend its top branches to fit!

Decorating your home is a great way to spend an evening or time at the weekend. All family members can get involved – included mischievous pets! Lights, wreaths, baubles, stockings – so many wonderful decorations to choose from. You may have a different colour scheme each year or maybe your décor tells a story with a new bauble being added every year depicting something you’ve done during the year or somewhere you’ve been, making your tree a very personal part of your family Christmas. If you’re away for Christmas, you may be staying somewhere like our cottage with a decorated tree, if not, consider a smaller tree or a stylish wooden 3D design to ensure the festive atmosphere.

Now is the time to dust off your CD of Christmas tunes or to ask your smart speaker to find your favourites and enjoy singing along whilst putting decorations up, wrapping presents, driving to and from friends and relations and feeling festive.

Making festive family Christmas cards is always fun. Recruit little ones to create a reindeer with their footprint or a cute robin with a red fingerprint. Pop the date on the back and these are mementos to keep for years to come.

When all the family gets together it’s a great time to enjoy playing those games that include everyone – be it Monopoly, charades or something that Father Christmas left under the tree.

Visiting Father Christmas is always a fun trip, with locations all over the country, the effort that goes into creating a magical environment for everyone of all ages. Houghton Hall Garden Centre near Carlisle is a favourite of ours. With a winter wonderland, beautiful reindeers and Santa’s grotto, it’s a fantastic place to visit.

Christmas jumpers are a growing tradition – aside from their fundraising day in December – the seasonal time is a great period to wear the crazy, colourful, funny jumpers and to match with family members. It makes a great photo!
