September on the Farm

The month of September on Cumbrian farms consists of very long days for farmers to ensure all the jobs are completed. Days can be 12 hours or more in duration. The majority of Cumbrian farms are livestock based and they benefit from the combination of grassy fields and our varied British weather.

Here at Chimney Gill we are a livestock farm, which is our family run business. We currently have over 1,200 sheep of three different breeds. These are North of England mules, Cheviot mule crosses and Texel sheep.

We are now preparing for sheep sales, which consists of checking the feet of every animal and making sure they are in good condition. We go to the livestock sales in the region looking for replacements and breeding sheep for our next season. Having just purchased two new tups (rams who we will breed our ewes with), we are very positive about the forthcoming year. We always look to have the best stock we can, to breed the very best animals we are able to and to look after them well.

On livestock farms in September, the young lambs will continue to be weaned from their mother’s milk and will be out in the fields enjoying the grass. The animals will also be prepared for auction.

September is a wonderful time to visit Chimney Gill Cottage as the seasons prepare to turn, the countryside looks beautiful with such a wide variety of colours. Explore the lakes and the fells, using our cottage as a great base to return to and relax in after an exciting and visually inspiring day out.
