Springtime and Half term ideas

Springtime brings beautiful signs of nature to enjoy in the Lake District such as daffodils, snowdrops and bluebells sprouting and blossoming. If you are lucky enough to spend time in this glorious county, there is an array of things to see and do, making the most of your time here. This could be during half term school holidays or simply a Spring break.  

If you’re near Keswick on a Thursday or a Saturday, be sure to visit the market, stretching from Bryson’s Bakery up to the top of the Market Square. As the area is pedestrianised, it’s safe to wander and browse at a relaxed speed. Open from 9am – 3.30pm, the market which is now in it’s 744th year has locally produced goods – clothes, meat, bakery items, crafts, gifts and much more. You’ll be unable to resist a snack to either nibble on or take back to your home.  

Whinlatter Forest is a great place to explore and in February there are exciting events to join in with. On Friday 21st February participate in an evening two hour guided walk through the forest. Hear, look and learn about the wildlife living in the area, including owls and round off the evening under the starry sky with a campfire, hot chocolate and marshmallows. For cycling enthusiasts, aged 14 and over, book onto the Dark Skies Event on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd February from 5pm – 7pm. The forest is the perfect location in which to experience the dark winter skies, whilst enjoying the environment with other likeminded cyclists. Qualified instructors will take your tour after you meet at the Cyclewise Bike Hire & Shop where you’ll be kitted out with your bike, helmet and light. At £39 per person including bike and equipment hire, this is a must-do activity. Anyone between 14 – 17 will need to be accompanied by an adult. Find out more www.cyclewise.co.uk 

Fancy a family theatre trip? Then the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick is the place to go. ‘The Naughty Fox’ is showing at 11am and 2pm on both Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd February. BounceFest does what it says – a four-day festival for children to enjoy an array of inflatable fun for all ages, taking place at the Lunesdale Sports Centre in Kirkby Lonsdale. Costing £6.50 for 90 minutes or £8 for 3 hours, whilst adults and babies under 9 months are free. This is a great value way to spend some family time. Open 10am – 5pm.
