Summer in Cumbria

Summer is such a great time in the Lake District. Plants and flowers are looking glorious, children are off school and we welcome thousands of visitors who are eager to explore everything that this fine county has to offer.

A popular season for us at Chimney Gill Cottage with back-to-back bookings, we love sharing information with our guests on places to go, things to see and events that are taking place during their stay with us. We wanted to share this information for our top days out during the summer.

The World of Beatrix Potter is based at Bowness on Windermere, an hour’s drive from here. A great attraction that adds to its offering during summer with the ‘Where is Peter Rabbit Show’. This is an entertaining show for all the family, on three times every day (11am, 1.30pm and 3,30pm except Fridays) until 1st September. It’s advisable to book in advance to ensure your tickets.

On the 17th & 18th August head for the excitement of the Harrington Kite Festival in Workington. The near coastal winds will ensure uplift for this fun weekend. Bring your own kite and fly with the professionals. You can also bring your teddy bear and let him/her have a go on the zip wire! With kite making workshops (do book in advance) and various stalls to visit, you will have fun from the moment it starts at 11am (until 4pm), on both days.

Carlisle in the summer is a place that has so much going on. There’s the castle and cathedral which warrant a visit and Bitts Park is a fabulous location for a picnic and somewhere for the kids to have fun and expel some energy. There is an adventure playground for 3-10 year olds, a fun sandy pirate ship play area and over the summer, a great water splash park (open until October) – so take swimming attire and towels! There is also crazy golf and a mini maze so you really can fill a day here and everyone will have a great time.

A definite date for your summer diary is Wednesday 21st August when those in the know will head for Carlisle Racecourse for their Summer Family Day event. There promises to be inflatables to bounce on, arts and craft stalls, face painting, pony rides and lawn games. Take your sun cream, picnic blanket and enjoy a great setting for this fun event.

From 22nd to 26th August, Carlisle City Centre sees the Summer International Market descend, which is definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby.

We love to head to Silloth when we feel like a day at the coast. Once a Victorian seaside resort, you can tell this from the architecture. You’ll find a harbour to view and docks which are over 150 years old. At West Silloth Beach, beyond the docks, there is a great sandy beach with dunes where you can stare across the Solway Firth to southern Scotland. Hopefully not a myth, but we have yet to spot them, are the porpoises which sometimes can be spotted if you look out to sea and northwards towards Skinburness

There are always so many things to do, see, visit, try, watch and experience that you’ll be booking a return trip very soon to do anything you missed out on. Visit our booking page here to stay with us.
