The Perfect Farmhouse Dessert for Christmas Day

As Christmas Day is fast approaching and the countdown to ensuring everything is ready for the holidays is ticking, let us take care of dessert inspiration for you and your family – wherever you are spending it.

We love delicious, hearty farmhouse recipes and at this time of year it is no different. Simply add a few ingredients to your shopping list – to either waltz around the supermarket aisles whilst Slade is singing in the background or add to your internet order as you sit at home choosing your groceries with one hand and writing gift tags with the other.

This crumble recipe is as easy as it is tasty and at this time of year it’s an ideal dessert to use up any mincemeat that you may have left over from making mince pies. Bring all these ingredients with you if you’re coming to stay at Chimney Gill Cottage this winter season. You could even weigh all your dry ingredients out and put them together in a pot or bag to save carrying more than you need.

The ingredients you’ll require to create this wonderful dessert, which will serve 8 people, are:

2 eating apples

2 pears

1 tbsp demerara sugar

2 tbsp cranberry sauce

400g mincemeat

175g plain flour

75g ground almonds

120g butter

2 tbsp caster sugar

Sprinkle ofCinnamon

Cream or custard to serve

Preheat your oven to gas mark 4 or 180°C and butter a large ovenproof dish in preparation.

Peel, core and slice the apples and pears. Line the dish with half of the fruit then spread out the mincemeat evenly on the top. Add dots of cranberry sauce all over. Lay out the remaining sliced fruit on top. Sprinkle over the sugar evenly. Measure out the flour and ground almonds and add the butter. Rub with your fingers until the consistency of breadcrumbs.

Spoon the crumble mix evenly over the fruit mixture and then sprinkle over the caster sugar and a little cinnamon. The perfect tasty finish.

Pop your ovenproof dish on a baking tray – in case the juices overrun – and bake in your preheated oven for 40 minutes.

If, after that time, the crumble top isn’t brown enough, turn up the temperature to 200°C and bake for a further 5 minutes.

Once the crumble is baked to perfection remove from the oven and leave to stand for 5 minutes at least as it will be extremely hot. This crumble tastes wonderful served hot with custard or equally as amazing cold with cream or ice cream.

Our easy to create dessert helps take a little stress out of the catering for the festive period and we hope you and your family enjoy it as much as we do. We’d like to take this opportunity to wish all of our customers – past, present and future – a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
