  1. Cumberland sausage

This sausage originated in Cumberland (now part of Cumbria) and is traditionally very long, sold in a circular coil.   The meat is typically cut rather than minced giving the Cumberland sausage a distinctive texture.  Popular throughout Cumbria, you can guarantee you will find a stand at Food Festivals with this delicacy.

  1. Sticky Toffee Pudding

The story goes that Francis Coulson developed this dessert at his Sharrow Bay Country House Hotel in Ullswater in 1960.  Now a firm, British favourite, Sticky Toffee Pudding is a sponge cake with finely chopped prunes or dates covered in toffee sauce and often served with custard, cream or ice cream.

  1. Damsons Gin

The Lyth and Winster Valleys are home to damson orchids and are used to make various different products including Damson Gin.  The flavour of the Westmoorland damson is fabulous and is made locally with traditional recipes – definitely one to try for gin lovers!

  1. Kendal Mint Cake

Kendal Mint Cake has been in production since 1918 and made by Romneys of Kendal.  The story goes that a Kendal confectioner was trying to make glacier sweets and took his eye off the pan for only a second….as he turned back to the pan, he noticed the mixture was no longer clear and when he poured it out the Kendal Mint Cake was born!  The cake is a source of energy for climbers and is popular among tourists and locals alike.

  1. Grasmere Gingerbread

The secret recipe of Sarah Nelson, Grasmere Gingerbread is a strong ginger-flavoured shortbread topped with sugary, ginger crumbs.  It is made in a small building which was once the village school in Grasmere and is only available from this shop or by mail order!  It might not be widely available but boy is it worth finding!
